WordPress: Share & Learn Session (every 2 weeks)

WordPress Designers / Developers:

We all gain more by sharing ideas and bouncing problems around with others. This meet-up aims to help WordPress users by bringing them together on a regular basis and allow everyone to participate and help each other.

This is a hands-on event. There won’t be a formal topic unless someone offers to present, in which case this will be posted ahead of time. So bring your expertise, your technical issues, any suggestions or queries and let’s all help each other to grow the WordPress community in Victoria.

You’ll make great connections with others in the same field, find collaborators for projects, and hopefully have fun at the same time.

The event will be hosted at the Victoria Computer Club. It’s centrally located, on a major bus route (21, 22 & 26) and parking is easy. The Clubhouse has a well organized computer lab with 9 PC’s running Windows, room for laptops too, and a teacher desk with a mounted projector hooked up. There is a kitchen offering beverages, and sometimes baked goodies.

Prerequisite: Must be an administrator on a self hosted WordPress site.

Limited to 15 people to keep it comfortable in the space – so register early!

Cost is $5 per person to cover the computer lab rental.

The Victoria Computer Club is located on the ground floor of a white apartment building on Burnside (opposite the Medical Clinic at the cross section with Wascana St).

WordPress: Using Statistics to attract readers to your Blog

WordPress Designers:

This week George will be presenting:

How would-be bloggers need a data source and tools to create factual, statistical data to attract readers or write guest blogs.  All levels of government produce tables of stats that can be  converted to graphs to support a blog’s point of view.  A good example is

http://rabble.ca/blogs/bloggers/christophermajka/2015/06/who-splits-whose-votes

George will take the results of the last federal election to show what could be done.

An example of  a dynamic site is

Any questions on this topic or general WordPress questions can be discussed after George’s presentation.  _____________________________________________________________________

WordPress Christmas Party! (potluck & BYOB)

WordPress Christmas Party!

Jacob has kindly offered a venue for this party – a space for about 30 people so make sure to RSVP soon.

It will be a potluck, and BYOB.

There will be a group of the experts and advanced WordPress users in attendance, including our other Meetup organizers, Jon Valade and John Overall, who can both make this date.

No WordPress presentations, this is a party, but we have some fun activities in mind. It should be a great evening, so look forward to seeing you there.

Parking is plentiful in the area.

Any questions, or if you’d like to let me know what food you’re bringing so we don’t double up – then just contact in advance.

Thanks, and see you there!

WordPress: Learning Series for Beginners (Lesson 2)

THIS EVENT ONLY IS ON A THURSDAY (due to Remembrance Day on the Wednesday).

A lot of people have registered for this event – so bring a laptop if you can – we only have 9 pc’s.

This week I will be following on from Jamie’s presentation with this week’s second lesson for beginners. I will talk about simple vs complex page builder type of themes, the advantages and disadvantages, a word on customization, some plugins that you should definitely add, and generally about how to efficiently get your site looking how you want it.

There will be plenty of time for questions and free time for just mingling and discussing your own WordPress successes and/or problems – so we can all help each other (this is usually the part of the evening where people really learn how to fix something on their site).

Limited to 20 people to keep it comfortable in the space – so register early!

Cost is $5 per person to cover the computer lab rental.

WordPress: Learning Series for Beginners – Lesson 1

Due to popular demand, I have increased the attendee limit to 20 – we have enough chairs, but those of you who can – please bring your laptops, as we only have 9 PC’s. Thanks

NEW!  We will be hosting a number of lessons for beginners, and encourage our WordPress champions to step forward and share their knowledge to make this a great community.

This week Jamie Renney of OriginalFire.ca will be presenting how to set up a WordPress site from scratch. Jamie will be talking about installing WordPress, give an overview of how it all works , how to adjust your settings, choosing and installing a theme, adding some important plugins, and creating simple pages and blog posts.

We now have our own test site, which Jamie will use to install WordPress. After his presentation you’ll have the chance to use this new site and try out various things you’ve been shown.

Limited to 15 people to keep it comfortable in the space – so register early!

Cost is $5 per person to cover the computer lab rental.

For those of you interested in learning about the free version of WordPress (WordPress.com) then you might be interested in the monthly Tuesday evening sessions run by the Victoria Computer Club – see their calendar for further information.

Location Details: The event will be hosted at the Victoria Computer Club. It’s centrally located, on a major bus route (21, 22 & 26) and parking is easy. We have 9 PC’s, space for laptop users, and a good kitchen area. (Ground floor of white apartment building on Burnside – opposite the Medical Clinic at the cross section with Wascana St, and our door fronts Burnside Rd behind a hedge).

WordPress: Share & Learn Session (every 2 weeks)

Prerequisite: Must be an administrator on a self-hosted WordPress site, meaning that you have a domain name and you pay for hosting.

On the WordPress ‘free’ site? No problem, George is running a session for that version of WordPress on Tuesday evenings – check out the calendar for more info http://victoriacomputerclub.org/calendar/)

Back to this session – this is a sharing session (no formal presentation). Instead this week bring your logins and problems and chat to other WordPressers – we can all help each other. We are all at various levels and this is a great place to learn more in an informal setting.

The more experienced among us can help WordPress newbies with their questions, problems, and guidance on hosting and theme selection.

Anyone with a laptop is encouraged to bring it in case we run out of PC’s.

Here’s an interesting article explaining basic WordPress terminology for the layperson

For those of you with experience you’ll make great connections with others in the same field, find collaborators for projects, and hopefully have fun at the same time.

We are looking at creating our own site as well for use at the clubhouse – kind of a sandbox where we can all work on projects together and try out new themes and plugins (I just haven’t had time to get that sorted for tomorrow).

Cost is $5 per person to cover the computer lab rental.

Limited to 15 people to keep it comfortable in the space – so register early!
